Lunchtime Pipe Organ Series: Susan Ferré

Susan Ferré lives in Gorham, NH, where since 2009 she directs a non-profit organization, Music in the Great North Woods, bringing classical music to the North Country, promoting concerts free of charge, and creating scholarships for young organists. She is currently serving as Dean of the NH Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, as well as Organist and Director of Music at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Berlin, NH. Resuming concerts for the annual Big Moose Bach Fest, she directed two performances of Bach's Mass in B minor in memory of those lost during the Covid years.

Past performances have included concerts at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, more than 50 concerts across France and Europe, others in Scandinavia, Brazil, Canada, and throughout the United States.  She has served the faculties of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, University of North Texas and the University of Paris at Vincennes.  From 1979 until 2004, Miss Ferré co-founded and directed the Texas Baroque Ensemble, offering performances of little known and major works, promoting early singing styles and using original instruments.  For fourteen years she directed the Early Music Weekend of concerts and lectures which launched the summer activities of the Festival-Institute at Round Top, Texas.

Earning degrees from Texas Christian University and the Eastman School of Music, Susan is a Fulbright Scholar, recipient of the Diplome d’Orgue et Improvisation from the Schola Cantorum in Paris, and received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of North Texas, where she was honored with a Distinguished Alumna award in 2001.  In 2015 she was made an Honorary Alumna of the Perkins School of Theology for her many years’ involvement coaching early music in the Master of Sacred Music program. Miss Ferré studied with Jean Langlais over a ten year period, and served as his guide on his "67 tour of the U.S. She also studied with Marcel Dupré, as well as with Maurice Duruflé, who assisted her in preparation for one of her performances featuring his works at Notre Dame.
